For years, René's puppet performances and creations entertained audiences across the country and around the world. He enjoyed an unequalled reputation in his field for his complete mastery of the puppet-maker’s craft, as well as his uniquely individual style of showmanship and manipulation. This combination accounted for the truly universal appeal of his productions.
From early in his childhood, Rene dedicated himself to perfecting the skills of performer and maker. Through the years, his enthusiasm remained as strong as it was the day he began hand-carving his first marionette from a block of wood, just like the legendary Geppetto created Pinocchio. It is with this zeal that René continued creating beautiful puppets, with a true craftsman’s painstaking attention to detail until his death in 2014.
However, designing and creating puppets of every description was only one facet of Rene’s artistry. His special style of manipulation, which become a trademark, kept him, and now his legacy, in constant demand.
Whether in Las Vegas showrooms, onboard luxury cruise ships, or in many well-known clubs abroad, Rene entertained audiences for years. His puppet creations delighted visitors at Southern California’s most famous tourist attractions, Knott’s Berry Farm for eight years, San Diego Zoo two years, and Universal Studios, just to name a few. His work can be seen on “Fantasy Island,” “Fridays,” “Benson,” “You Bet Your Life,” “Mrs. Columbo,” “Bill Cosby’s Christmas Special,” and many others. Major motion pictures and television commercials include hamburgers for McDonald’s, the Pillsbury Doughboy, and characters in the Lily Tomlin film, “The Incredible Shrinking Woman.” His puppets can be seen in commercials for Toyota, Continental Airlines, R. C. Cola, Bill-Mar Farms and the California Dairy Association.
Whether his characters and performances are featured by major corporations or private parties in the homes of local Southern Californians, Rene’s legacy as craftsman and choreographer are highly in evidence.
